Here I Stand: Martin Luther Part 3

This week on Fresh Ground Theology’s The Weekend Cup, Martin Luther’s debate over indulgences grows into a much larger conflict with the Catholic Church. We follow Luther through the Leipzig Debate, his growing criticism of Church authority, and his conflict with Pope Leo X. Luther soon faces excommunication and publicly burns the papal bull issued against him.

The conflict reaches a turning point in 1521 when Luther appears before Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms. There he is ordered to take back his writings. We look at what Luther actually said, the famous “Here I stand” tradition, and the Edict of Worms that made him an outlaw. The episode ends with Luther suddenly disappearing on his journey home as the Protestant Reformation enters a new and dangerous stage.
