In this episode of The Distracted Christian Podcast, Wes Scott dives into one of the strangest and most fascinating sections of the book of Job: God’s descriptions of Behemoth and Leviathan in Job 40–41.

Wes opens with his love for mysterious creatures like Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and even South Carolina’s infamous Lizard Man, then turns to the biblical “monsters” that appear in Job. Are Behemoth and Leviathan symbolic agents of chaos? Mythological creatures? Dinosaurs? Dragons? Wes makes the case that, in the context of Job, these creatures are presented as real, terrifying, created beings that display the majesty and authority of Yahweh.

The episode explores the possibility that Behemoth may have been something like an Ankylosaurus and that Leviathan may have been a true dragon-like creature. But the main point is not creature classification. The main point is worship. God points Job to creation to remind him that Yahweh rules over what no human can control.

Key Themes

Behemoth and Leviathan in Job
Wes examines Job 40–41 and argues that these creatures are described as real animals within the immediate context of God’s speech to Job.

Leviathan as chaos imagery
The episode acknowledges that Leviathan appears elsewhere in Scripture, including Psalm 74:14 and Isaiah 27, as a symbol or agent of chaos. However, Wes argues that Job uses Leviathan differently.

Creation points to the Creator
From Behemoth and Leviathan to whales, elephants, cells, bacteria, and atoms, creation should move us toward awe, repentance, praise, and worship.

God rules over chaos
If Yahweh can control creatures as mighty as Behemoth and Leviathan, then he can also rule over the chaos in our lives.

Scripture Referenced

  • Job 39–42
  • Job 40:15–24
  • Job 41
  • Psalm 74:14
  • Isaiah 27

Memorable Ideas

  • Behemoth and Leviathan are not merely “Bible trivia” creatures; they serve a theological purpose.
  • God uses creation to humble Job and reveal his own power, wisdom, and authority.
  • The right response to God’s majesty is the same response Job gives: repentance, faith, praise, and worship.
  • Strange passages in the Bible are worth slowing down for.

Episode Challenge

When you wake up in the morning, pray and thank Yahweh for who he is. Praise him as the Almighty God of creation. Thank him for sending his Son, for ruling over chaos, and for revealing his glory through everything he has made—from the largest creatures in the ocean to the smallest parts of creation.

Closing Thought

Behemoth and Leviathan remind us that God’s creation is bigger, stranger, and more majestic than we often realize. And if Yahweh rules over creatures that no human can tame, then we can trust him with the chaos, fear, and uncertainty in our own lives.
