What do you do with a Bible story that sounds like it belongs in an action movie—complete with assassination, deception, and a king’s humiliating downfall?

In this episode, guest host Wes Scott dives into one of the wildest scenes in Judges: Ehud, a left-handed Benjamite, delivers Israel by taking out Eglon king of Moab in a private upper room. It’s strange, graphic, and unforgettable—and it raises bigger questions than most people expect.

This episode is not just “look how crazy the Bible is.” It’s a deeper challenge:

What if the odd details in Scripture are there on purpose—and what if God still delivers in unexpected ways?

Coffee, Christmas pajamas, and a kitten named Grease Lightning

Before the story gets intense, Wes sets the scene: a cotton-headed ninny muggins mug, Christmas pajamas, and a kitten sidekick watching the recording. That contrast only makes the passage hit harder once the narrative turns.

What happens in Judges 3 (and why it matters)

Israel falls into a familiar Judges pattern:

  • Sin
  • Oppression
  • Crying out
  • Deliverance

But the deliverer is not what anyone would choose. Ehud is:

  • Left-handed (an unexpected trait in an ancient world that assumed right-handed norms)
  • Strategic
  • Bold
  • Used by God in a way that feels shocking—and effective

Wes highlights the tactical edge: guards would not expect a weapon strapped on the right thigh, because a right-handed fighter wouldn’t carry it there. Ehud does. The result is a “secret message” that becomes a turning point for a nation.

Provocative question:
If God chooses unlikely deliverers on purpose, what does that say about the people we overlook—or the weaknesses we assume disqualify us?

The “strange passage” isn’t random—it’s a message

Wes presses the point that Ehud’s success isn’t mainly about being left-handed.

Ehud wins because Yahweh raised him up.

That theme expands into a broader biblical pattern of deliverance:

  • Egypt and the plagues
  • Joseph from pit to power
  • Noah preserved through the flood
  • Jeremiah sustained under persecution
  • Christ raised as the ultimate deliverer

Provocative question:
When you read a violent, messy deliverance story, are you seeing chaos—or God’s sovereignty working through it?

Gilgal, idols, and the unseen war

One of the most important interpretive moves in the episode is the mention of the sculptured stones/idols near Gilgal.

Wes connects:

  • Joshua 4 (memorial stones of Yahweh’s deliverance at the Jordan)
  • Judges 3 (Israel now worshiping idols at the same location)

This becomes a warning: a place once marked by God’s faithfulness becomes a place of spiritual compromise.

Wes also brings in Dr. Michael Heiser’s framework (from Supernatural) to argue that idolatry is not merely “bad habits,” but a real spiritual battle with real opposition.

Provocative question:
How often do we turn sacred ground into compromised ground—and not realize the cost until oppression follows?

Applications Wes gives

1) Cry out to Christ for salvation

Wes anchors this in Romans:

  • Romans 10:13 — calling on the Lord
  • Romans 10:9 — confession and resurrection faith

2) Cry out for deliverance in despair

He makes a crucial pastoral distinction:
God may not remove the torment immediately, but He will supply grace to endure.

3) Cry out for protection from spiritual oppression

Wes emphasizes spiritual realism without fear-mongering:

  • the spiritual world is real
  • hostile forces exist
  • Yahweh’s power surpasses all rival powers

He closes with an unmistakable thesis:
Yahweh delivers—often through unexpected means—and ultimately through Jesus Christ.

Provocative question:
If God doesn’t always remove the fight, will you trust Him to carry you through it?
