St. John of the Cross called it “a night more lovely than the dawn.” But how can something that feels so empty, so dry, so lost be called lovely?

The Dark Night of the Sense weans us from spiritual sugar, from the pleasure of God’s gifts, so we might long for God Himself. Like a child learning to walk without holding the hand, the soul must learn to stand in the dark.
